Setting Up And Typing On An Amharic Keyboard For All Devices

Adding an Amharic keyboard to your digital devices is a very simple process.

The Amharic writing system, known as Ge’ez or Fidel, has hundreds of distinct characters.

Fortunately, modern devices use phonetic keyboards to make typing in Amharic incredibly straightforward.

You don’t need a massive physical keyboard to write in this beautiful language.

Instead, you’ll type using the standard English alphabet to construct Amharic characters phonetically.

This guide will show you exactly how to set up and use an Amharic keyboard on your phone or computer.

Understanding how Amharic phonetic typing works

Amharic is written using a syllabary system.

This means that each written character represents a combination of a consonant and a vowel.

When you type on a modern Amharic keyboard, you use standard English letters to build these exact sounds.

You simply type the letter for the consonant followed by the letter for the vowel.

The keyboard automatically merges your keystrokes into the correct Amharic character on your screen.

If you type a consonant by itself, the keyboard will usually output the sixth form (sadis) of that letter.

Adding different vowels immediately changes the shape of the base letter.

Here’s an example of how you would type the “b” family of characters on a standard phonetic keyboard:

KeystrokesAmharic letterPhonetic sound
b + ebe
b + ubu
b + ibi
b + aba
b + i + ebie
bb
b + obo

To type a complete word, you just sound it out using the English keys.

For example, typing “s”, “e”, “l”, “a”, “m” in sequence will automatically generate the word for hello.
